Vaping is the practice of inhaling aerosol (commonly called “vapor”) that is produced using a device known as vape. It has been touted as a modern, more healthful alternative to the 7,000-year-old practice of tobacco smoking, which has been linked to a variety of serious health problems for decades.

While vaping has become popular only in recent years, the concept of electronic cigarette or “e-cigarette” devices is not entirely new. In 1965, American inventor Herbert Gilbert received a patent for the earliest type of e-cigarette, a device which he described as a “smokeless non-tobacco cigarette.” More than four decades later, in 2004, Chinese pharmacist Hon Lik introduced the first modern e-cigarette, which eventually diversified into the different types we know today.

E-cigarettes vs. Vapes

But hold on a second there. Aren’t e-cigarettes actually different from vapes? Well, yes and no. What most people think of when they hear the word “e-cigarette” are the “cigalike” devices that are made to replicate the look of actual cigarettes, from its brown and white cylindrical body to its lighted end, which is simulated by LED lighting.

Because of their small size, cigalike devices only have a small cartridge that contains the e-liquid, the solution that is heated by the device and is then atomized into aerosol or vapor. The small size is also a disadvantage in that they don’t create as much vapor as many people would like. As you can imagine, some people love more vapor because it elevates the experience for them.

Now, what are commonly called “vapes” include the bigger devices known as personal vaporizers and vape mods. They are technically still e-cigarettes, but they offer the added benefit of better performance, more vapor created, and a wider choice of flavors.

Because they are bigger, their e-liquid cartridges also don’t run out of juice as fast as the cartridges of cigalike devices, and their batteries also often have power for much longer.

How do vapes work?

E-cigarettes and vapes come in metal tubes made of stainless steel, brass, or aluminum. Inside, they have a tiny sensor and a computer chip which trigger a heater when the user takes a drag. The heat is applied to a canister that contains the e-liquid solution. As the solution evaporates, it turns into an aerosol or vapor which is then extracted by the person through the mouthpiece. This vapor is inhaled and exhaled in a similar manner as cigarette smoke.

Vaping vs. smoking

The main ingredients of e-liquid are the base (vegetable glycerin or propylene glycol), water, food-grade flavoring, and nicotine. A lot of times, nicotine—the same addicting ingredient found in cigarette smoke—is excluded altogether. This very lean list of ingredients makes vaping a whole lot healthier than smoking.

By choosing vaping over smoking, one is effectively preventing oneself from inhaling the wide variety of harmful chemicals produced by the burning of a cigarette. Medical experts note that there are over 600 ingredients in cigarettes. When these are burned, they produce over 7,000 types of chemicals, 69 of which are known carcinogens, and many others cause a whole host of harmful effects.

Nicotine and flavoring

One great way to make the most of your vaping experience is to choose your preferred nicotine level and flavoring. Nicotine levels range from virtually nothing to as much as 24 milligrams per milliliter. If you’re a smoker and you are trying to quit, you can start with higher levels of nicotine and then gradually decrease the level as you successfully transition into vaping.

As for the flavors, there are virtually hundreds to choose from, ranging from ice-creamy varieties like vanilla, chocolate, and bubblegum to those with more artisanal, complex qualities that manufacturers create with as much flair as a perfumer would have done with their intricate scents.

Vaping is a great alternative to smoking if you are having difficulty quitting. There are a great variety of devices and consumables that you can choose from, and communities of vaping enthusiasts exist nationwide.
